Myspace (without a captial s)

June 14, 2013

Remember the days of a buzzing MySpace homepage? A social network which brought strangers together from every corner of the globe, through the power of common interests and music? Well, it’s back, and it’s making sure everyone knows about it.

From 2005 to early 2008 it held the title as the most visited social network in the world, but users began to move their social networking business elsewhere as rival social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Bebo became to rise in popularity, leaving MySpace to lose millions of users.

But it seems Singer and Actor; Justin Timberlake has got inspiration from his 2010 film the Social Network, and decided to take on the task of re-launching the site. Redesigned as a social music site and rebranded with a lower case ‘s’, it displays bigger, bolder images of people and album artwork with a strong emphasis on music, musicians, filmmakers and creative’s.

This week it launched a $20million promotional campaign, featuring a colorful advert which shows a bus full of artists frolicking around. But Myspace hope the real incentive for its users is the ability to build your own personal radio station, filled with all the songs you love!

The idea is to get artists to curate radio stations for their fans to play, picking songs from their own back catalogues as well as tracks that have inspired them. Pharrell Williams, Lil Wayne, Carly Rae Jepsen and investor Justin Timberlake are among the first curators on board.

Along with a state of the art app for iPhone, Andriod and iPad, which includes a GIF creator allowing users to “instantly create a stop-motion masterpeice”, Myspace are hoping to eliminate any pre-conceptions that we may have about the old site. With a completely different interface, layout and navigation system, the new social network is a whole new experience.

One thing is for sure, it will be interesting to see how this affects how we use social networking. Watch the Advert here:
