The 1st Nottingham Clitch Event featuring Jon Burgerman
September 23, 2015
Last night, The Dairy joined the many who had gathered together in the very cool and quirky National Videogame Arcade in Hockley, to support the first of the fantastic Glitch events. The Glitch events are set to occur bi-monthy as an opportunity to for those who are creatively inclined to come together and listen to inspiring creative people. A chance to be get away from computer screens and as the co-organiser, Neil Rostance from Fat Free Media encouraged, ‘to get back to basics’.
And what better way to kick off than with the doodle King, the brilliant Jon Burgerman. Having studied in Nottingham, Jon told us his love for doodling had started from a early age. But it was only when he embarked on his Fine Art course, did he realise the potential of his doodles. Jon has gone on to build a doodle empire, exhibiting and taking on commissions all over the world. Jon has even collaborated with brands such as Nike, and made New York headlines with the art he is creating in the city’s streets.
Yet in spite of his stardom, Jon couldn’t have given a more enjoyable, humbling talk. He reminded us of some key things to remember when creating, such as “allow your imagination to be the raw material”. Jon was also keen to show his failed projects, sharing with us his journeys, both successful and unsuccessful, all of equal significance to his work. Having us create our own doodles or rather ‘characters’, whilst being extremely amusing, also emphasised his message about in what simple forms creative genius can be.
Throughout the talk Jon had the room laughing and completely captivated, and the discussions over yummy toastbites afterwards confirmed his absolute success. It was already a big thumbs up from The Diary to Jon and the Glitch organisers, and after being slightly disappointed at not winning a prizes for our doodles, the cherry on the cake was being personally gifted with stickers created by Jon himself. These are now very happy in their new home on Libby and Verena’s desk.
It was a great night and we are very much looking forward to the next one on the 22nd of November…whatever that might be! We’ll keep checking the Glitch Website to find out.
